Introduction

When you enroll your child in Florida's VPK program, you're giving them access to a structured early learning experience designed to prepare them for kindergarten. But how do teachers and parents know if a child is making progress? That's where VPK assessment standards come in.

At Little Sunshine Preschool in New Port Richey, we use these standards daily to guide our instruction and track each child's development. Here's what every Pasco County parent should understand about VPK assessments.

What Are VPK Education Standards?

Florida's VPK Education Standards outline the skills and knowledge children should develop during their VPK year. These standards are research-based and aligned with what children need to succeed in kindergarten. They cover four main domains:

  1. Physical Development

  2. Approaches to Learning

  3. Social and Emotional Development

  4. Language, Communication, and Emergent Literacy

The VPK Assessment Process

Florida uses several assessment tools to measure VPK student progress throughout the year:

Florida VPK Assessment

This assessment is administered three times during the VPK year and measures:

  • Print Knowledge: Understanding of letters, words, and how print works

  • Phonological Awareness: Ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words

  • Mathematics: Number recognition, counting, and basic math concepts

  • Oral Language/Vocabulary: Expressive and receptive language skills

What the Assessment Measures

Let's break down what teachers are looking for in each area:

Print Knowledge

  • Recognizing uppercase and lowercase letters

  • Understanding that print carries meaning

  • Following text from left to right

  • Identifying parts of a book

Phonological Awareness

  • Recognizing rhyming words

  • Identifying beginning sounds in words

  • Breaking words into syllables

  • Blending sounds to make words

Mathematics
